A gas smell is never something to ignore. Here's the safe response — and when to call a licensed gas fitter.
Natural gas has a distinctive rotten-egg smell added to it precisely so leaks are easy to detect. If you notice it, treat it seriously and act calmly.
Do not use anything that could create a spark — no light switches, no appliances, and no phones inside the affected area. Even a small spark can ignite gas.
Open doors and windows to ventilate the space, and turn off the gas at the meter if you can do so safely.
Leave the property and, once you're outside and clear, call your gas provider's emergency line and a licensed gas fitter. Don't go back inside until it's been declared safe.
Once the immediate risk is handled, a licensed gas fitter will use electronic leak detection to find the exact source, repair it, and issue a compliance certificate confirming your gas system is safe to use again.
