Burst pipe? Here's exactly what to do in the first 5 minutes

A burst pipe can flood a room fast. These are the steps that limit the damage before your plumber arrives.

A burst pipe is one of the most stressful plumbing emergencies — but the damage it causes is largely decided in the first few minutes. Staying calm and knowing where to go can save you thousands in water damage.

First, shut off the water at the mains. This is usually a tap near your water meter at the front boundary of the property. Turn it clockwise until it stops. If the burst is on your hot water line, also switch off your hot water system.

Next, turn off the power to any affected areas at the switchboard if water is anywhere near electrical outlets or the ceiling. Never touch electrical fittings while standing in water.

Open the cold taps around the house to drain the remaining water in the pipes and relieve pressure. Move furniture and valuables away from the water, and lay down towels to contain the spread.

Then call a licensed emergency plumber. Take a couple of photos of the damage first — they're useful for insurance. A good emergency crew will talk you through anything else while they're on the way.
